I feel that the 360 Elite is not worth buying at this time. 2 Reasons Microsoft made this system is cause they feel the need to compete w/ the PS3, and also cause they just want to take us for even more of our hard earned moolah. The only way I would buy this system is if they offered to buy back the premium system, and charged me $79.99 to get the Elite Upgrade. But there is no way i’m shelling out another $500 for a system. Well I guess if I traded in my system to Gamestop (probably for like $150… then they’d turn around and sell it for $350) I’d still shell out like $300-$350. Nah I’m cool w/ what I got.

I think it would definitely be worth the upgrade if they had the new 65nm CPU and GPU, but apparently that’s not coming until the Fall. As-is, it’s kind of a push for me - I want the extra 100GB hard drive space, definitely, and HDMI would be nice but I’m already extremely happy with VGA on my 56″ DLP - looks just as good as my PS3 over HDMI to the same TV.

So I’m waiting until they do 3 things:

    1. New CPU at 65nm
    2. New GPU at 65nm
    3. Quieter DVD drive with some kind of fix to prevent scratching DVDs

This would make for a much quieter, cooler (heat output) system that would be safer to use for my disks if someone bumps the unit. In short, this would be a true upgrade.

One comment on the whole HD-DVD vs. BluRay thing - as someone who owns a PS3, I can say that BluRay is really not that big of a deal so HD-DVD shouldn’t be either. Why? Because downloadable content is SO much better! If you have a 360, buy a single episode of the original Star Trek in HD (City at the Edge of Tomorrow) - it looks as good as anything you’ll see on BluRay or HD-DVD and there’s no media to lose. Plus you can delete and re-download any time you want.

Microsoft have stated themselves “If you already have a 360 don’t buy the elite”.

The Elite is just an option for a niche market that are interested in downloading large amounts of hd media and want hdmi.

The 360 is first and foremost a GAMES console, nobody’s forcing anybody to buy the elite, it’s an OPTION. Too bad Sony did’nt give anybody an option to buy the PS3 without blu-ray as they might have been able to sell some consoles.

You can buy the hard drive Separately for your existing 360, it’s a bit costly right now as laptop size drives are still expensive but if you can wait i’m sure the prices will come down.

Sony’s responce to the elite was “We think every PlayStation 3 owner should have an “elite” experience” which actually means “We think every PlayStation 3 owner should be forced to buy blu-ray and help us win the hd format war”.

I guess your probably asking the wrong question.

Is the Xbox 360 Elite worth the “upgrade?”
no, microsoft has said as much.

Is the Elite worth buying if you don’t already own a 360?
if you belong to the niche market that it’s targeting, yes probably.
