As someone who bought the 20GB version, I can definitely say this was a mistake. I don’t need wireless support, and I bought a 160GB replacement drive for about $130 from NewEgg (about the cost of the difference between the 20GB and 60GB PS3s). Now I have a much faster drive thats almost three times the size of the 60GB drive for about the same money.

I think this was a horrible move on Sony’s part. They’ve mistaken the fact that early adopters bought the more expensive system for an assumption that the rest of future PS3 owners would be willing to pay that much. The only way this would have made sense would have been if it coincided with at least a $100 price drop. Then they could have said that the production costs had lowered and allowed them to provide the high-end system for the same cost as the old system, and would have positioned them well against the 360 Elite at $479 (with twice the hard drive size).

Eliminating the 20GB system just puts the PS3 further out of reach of a younger crowd. Heck I’m the only one I even know who bought one! I have about 12 friends & relatives who bought a 360. Sony will NEVER breach the mainstream market at $600 - it’ll just never happen - it’s not a mainstream price-point. We’ll need to see a PS3 for at MOST $399 before that’ll happen, and now that’s just that much further away - 2009 at the earliest. By then my grandma will probably own a Wii and almost all the college kids will have just gotten cheap PCs or 360s.

Sony’s elimination of the 20GB PS3 SKU is not a smart business decision, because it eliminates the $20 argument. The $20 argument is that if you are going to purchase a 360 (ideally the Elite) you might as well go for the 20GB PS3 SKU, because you get a Blu-ray player for $20 additional dollars. At present the lowest costing PS3 model is $600, which makes Microsoft’s business decision to create the Elite a perfectly timed product introduction.
