I think that the lack of information initially in regards to this change in hardware specs was a bad move, but overall, they need to find a way to make these things cheaper and if the limitations are minor as they seem, I think that it will not stop too many people from buying the PS3. Chalk one up for Sony corporate!!

Sony’s new hardware spec is going to save a marginal amount per unit sold, however the brand damage for the Playstation 3 to Europe fans is even more costly. The region faced a delay to Mar. 2007, hefty pricing for games and software, and now a gutted system compared to other territories. I think Sony should have released the standard SKU to Europe in its initial shipment so that all territories start off on the same page of hardware and die hard fans are content. After launch, cost-cut away in all three territories.

There are about 10 000 games for the PS2, of which 2400 are released in PAL territories. It makes financial sense not to include hardwarecompatibility in these terriories just to make the PS3 compatible with 7600 games that will never be played anyway. About 40% PS2 PAL games will be compatible on launch day, and that numer is sure to increase.
